Dallas-born and Los Angeles-based artist Liv.e is hard to define — in the best way possible. Her “Lazyeaterbetsonherlikeness” music video directed by Livingston Matthews, frequently known as Pink Siifu, is a smooth and soulful 1990s-tinged homage to a past lover. “SirLadyMakemFall” recalls some early Texas chopped-and-screwed elements with contrasting pop sensibilities for a warped if not singular affair. Her fantastic “Inside With Liv.e (In Real Life Live Session)” is definitely worth a revisit if you haven’t watched the 10-minute performance yet.

Today the 22-year-old producer and singer-songwriter returns with two new singles with “Bout These Pipedreams” and “Lessons From My Mistakes…but I Lost Your Number” from her upcoming Couldn’t Wait To Tell You full-length due out later this year. Liv.e comes with some serious credentials, too. Tyler, The Creator and Janelle Monae are big fans. She was also featured on Earl Sweatshirt‘s Feet of Clay EP.

On “Bout These Pipedreams,” Liv.e loops her voice into a refrain, contemplating fantasy and reality and then back again. There’s some serious Erykah Badu influences ringing through the filtered vocals. “Lessons From My Mistakes…but I Lost Your Number” finds her floating through half-spoken word half-rapped verses with a lo-fi beat comprised of jazz-infused piano keys. The real attention grabber comes in at the 1:30 mark, right when you think the song is over. Her soft singing is a warm welcome on the chorus.

Listen to Liv.e’s latest offerings below and be on the lookout for her Couldn’t Wait To Tell You project to arrive later in the summer. For more of her previous work, revisit her 2018 EP Hoopdreams and 2017’s F.R.A.N.K.

In more music news, Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes joined HYPEBEAST in a new interview to talk about their collaborative project What Kinda Music, the jam-sessions that led to the unplanned project and their current quarantine routines.
