Breaking Bread is a new series by HYPEBEAST CN that explores both food and fashion with its host Boris Yu. Over the first six episodes, Boris will converse with notable Japanese streetwear and fashion designers, including AMBUSH‘s Yoon and Verbal, and fragment design‘s Hiroshi Fujiwara, while dining at equally renowned restaurants in Tokyo. A food lover and oversized fashionista himself, Boris and his guests will share life experiences, creative philosophies and secret stories, all while uncovering culinary grails.

For episode one, dubbed “Secret Restaurant,” Boris meets with the design duo of MISTERGENTLEMAN, Takeshi “BIG-O” Osumi and Yuichi Yoshii, at an off the beaten path crustacean speciality spot, Ubuka, located in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district.

Since the 1990s, BIG-O and Yuichi have been key players in Japan’s fashion industry, and since 2012, strong influences with their “postmodern clothing” label. “We are not creating simply modern or simply classic, but something that connects with the future,” muses BIG-O, to which Yuichi follows-up, “Postmodern clothing is something that connects to the future and yet very basic.”

This episode features references to the following:

01:50 – BIG-O’s tattoos
02:23 – Brand philosophy
04:55 – Brand logo
05:43 – Hiroshi Fujiwara
07:05 – Secret of design
07:48 – “Arguments”
08:36 – Music influences
10:10 – Reviving WAVE
11:49 – The food business
13:11 – Last meals
