Wale Delivers Powerful "Sue Me" Short Film Directed by Kerby Jean-Raymond
The 8-minute offering stars Lucas Hedges.
Wale delivers a powerful statement on race in America with his new music video and short film for “Sue Me” from his 2019 full-length Wow… That’s Crazy. The project packs some serious star power with Pyer Moss founder and designer extraordinaire Kerby Jean-Raymond handling writing and directing duties with Lucas Hedges (Mid90s, Manchester by the Sea, Honey Boy) starring.
The visual is an experiment in role reversal. At times it’s funny (see Quaker Oats turned to Melanin Oats; Black People Meet to White People Meet) but mostly it’s an emotionally resonant piece that finds white people struggling in poverty, dealing with the weight of negative depictions of them in the media and the effects of stop-and-frisk police profiling. The infamous Starbucks arrest video is also reenacted. The short film does show the importance of community to uplift and spread hope. The video ends with a real-life prisoner talking into a cell-phone about the lack of care for inmates while the coronavirus runs rampant in the for-profit prison system.
