Pink Siifu's New "SMD" Visual Is Full of Focused Rage
A chaotic Jeremiah Jae-produced track from Siifu’s recent ‘NEGRO’ project.
Pink Siifu wants to give you the unexpected. Today he furthers that vision with a black and white visual for “SMD”, performing a masterclass in focused rage, his vocals hyperventilating over Jeremiah Jae‘s controlled demolition.
After his smooth and soulful 2018 rap album ensley garnered critical-acclaim, Siifu delivered a follow-up that displayed a similar if not progressive vibe in that same vein with his “,NEGRO” music video, sampling Eddie Kendricks’ 1977 classic “Intimate Friends”. What followed was a sharp left-turn, as the multi-talented artist dropped a full-length project titled NEGRO inspired by punk, metal and his anger turned aggression aimed at America’s systemic racism.
“I was shuffling through a couple names. It was gonna be called To Be Angry. I had a demo called fuck(demo) that I got four of the songs on the album from that,” Pink Siifu told HYPEBEAST in a recent interview. “I’m just a n*gga in America and I feel like that word explains the experience. Like white people can’t say n*gga but they’ve been saying Negro and that’s instilled in us. Low-key it has the same effect. It’s a weird word because it holds a lot of memories and history.”
Siifu has remained busy this year, first with the “Running Red Lights” collaboration with Rivers Cuomo and The Avalanches then by directing LIV.E’s “Lazyeaterbetsonherlikeness” music video. NEGRO serves as a testament to just how widespread and endless his influences are, and just how willing he is to branch out and explore different genres.
