NBA Star Aaron Gordon Is Focusing on His Rap Career
Sending shots at the judges who robbed him of his Dunk Contest title.
NBA star Aaron Gordon has participated in some of the most legendary NBA Dunk Contests of the modern era, and yet he walked away without a single trophy in all three. His most recent appearance this past February was full of controversy with basketball fans the world over demanding a different outcome in Aaron’s favor. Regardless, the Orlando Magic Forward didn’t end up with the gold. Now that the NBA season has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus, Gordon is focusing on his rap career. His latest music video, “9 OUT OF 10” is a tribute and overt slight at the score on his final dunk in this year’s contest.
The track follows “Pull Up” from earlier in April, where Gordon was practicing some social distancing on the golf course. The project doesn’t seem to be a gimmick either, as he experiments with chopped and screwed vocals, hangs out in his estate drinking some wine, and flashing his iced-out ‘00’ jersey number chain. He’s in his own lane lyrically too when compared to fellow NBA star-tuned-rapper Damian Lillard. The beat is a bit of a harkening back to some 2015 OVO production, but lays a solid foundation for Aaron to rap about the motivation that came from his All-Star Weekend snub.
“Even Adam Silver told me I deserved the gold/ Didn’t get the trophy but I got something to hold/ These n*ts…/ Forgive me but I won’t sell my soul/ Big chillin/ Paint me as a villain/ I jumped over the biggest dude in the building.” It’s the perfect example of the age old adage that ballers want to be rappers and vice versa.
