Nike‘s Tinker Hatfield-designed Air Max 1 and Huarache might have been seperated by 4 years (1987 and 1991, respectively), but each has left an enduring mark on the world of footwear — the AM1 as the first silhouette with visible Air cushioning, and the Huarache for a minimalist neoprene upper that was “stripped to the bare essentials,” as its original ad copy claimed. Now, the two are trading places in era-appropriate style for a new “CH.1” pack that pushes the Huarache’s “Purple Punch” colorway onto the Air Max 1 and the AM1’s “Sport Blue” palette onto the Huarache.
Aside from serving as an apt follow-up to the DNA Series’ inaugural “87 x 91” pack — which used recognizable “Scream Green” and “Varsity Red” hues — the “CH.1” pack is another moment in the spotlight for two memorable Nike Sportswear color schemes.
First to bat is the Air Max 1 “Purple Punch.” The luscious lavender hue that provides its nom de guerre is present on a Huarache-inspired plastic heel piece as well as the sockliner, tongue tag and midfoot underlay. This is contrasted by a healthy helping of white leather and neoprene, the latter of which salutes the Huarache even further with a prolifically perforated quarter panel. Black Swooshes, collar trim and outsoles combine with white midsoles and clear Air Max units to complete the look.
Following closely behind is the Huarache “Sport Blue.” Drawing from the Air Max 1’s 2nd most famous colorway, it uses bold blues on the heel, midfoot cage and mudguard, the last of which also borrows its shape from the AM1. The rest of its pieces are dressed in either a soft gray or a crisp white, and Air Max 1-style tongue tags and top eyestays proffer finishing touches.
Unlike the aforementioned “87 x 91” pack, the Air Max 1 “Purple Punch” and Huarache “Sport Blue” will be sold separately instead of together, with each pair priced at $110 USD. A release is scheduled for March 13 via Nike SNKRS GB.
