Shortly after unveiling its “Box of Chocolates” iteration of its GEL-Kayano 5, ASICS is back with a new rendition of the silhouette, this time bringing back some vintage qualities of the OG silhouette. Featured is the GEL-Kayano 5 RE, a mold that includes a bevy of leather panels that was seen in the first generation of the GEL-Kayano series, giving it the same crafty feel from back in the day. Featured are the two colorways “Yellow/SYZ” and “Beige/BCH.”
The former is doused in a bright fluorescent yellow palette embellished with a mix of materials like suede, rubber and mesh. Starting at the top of the shoe, ASICS’ “a” logo is embroidered at the tongue, followed by dense round laces that cross over the batted nylon forefoot. Suede eyelet panels appear at the top of the shoe’s laces, complemented by a richly dyed cotton fabric that’s placed at the heel, sidewalls and toebox — it comes with subtly frayed edges for added textural contrast. Furthermore, bold side-stripes are placed at the body, detailed with jagged top-stitching over its thin panels. The “Beige/BCH” comes with the same design features as the “Yellow/SYZ,” embracing a creamy, more subdued palette of light ecru and marbly hints of purple. Both sneakers see a chunky DUOMAX midsole, equipped with the essential GEL cushioning technology.
ASICS’ GEL-Kayano 5 RE “Yellow/SYZ” and “Beige/BCH” are currently available at atmos’ website for $136 USD.
