London’s Design Museum has partnered with creative studio Play Nice to release a new film celebrating how the Black diaspora has shaped electronic music. Titled The New Rave, the film arrives alongside the Design Museum’s “Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers” exhibition, which is currently on-show, and focuses on London’s DJs, music groups and Black-owned record labels.

Launching the film, Play Nice’s Ayo Fagbemi and Nate Agbetu said, “This year has been tumultuous for the music industry we all know and love, and it’s been hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel. We’ve all been so disconnected from one another, from customs like dancing that bring communities together. The Electronic exhibition has not just been timely, but a needed reminder of the relationship that society has with sonics.

The New Rave is about celebrating that, recognising our forefathers, contemporaries in that space and the value of art or design beyond its archival value. Our film uses the dance floor to find the intersection between the cultural industry and fringe communities that may not feel welcome to its wonders. It’s an ode to their ability to claim space and the start of our journey to helping them do that.”

The arrival of The New Rave also kicks off Play Nice’s “Field Trip” project. The initiative will provide free tickets and experiences in the cultural industry to people from fringe communities. This includes special access to the “Electronic” exhibition as part of the Design Museum’s “Ticket Mate” fund.

In other arts news, the Museum of London plans to harvest dreams as part of its “Guardians of Sleep” project.
