'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba' Movie Surpasses ¥30 Billion JPY at the Japanese Box Office
Breaking a record previously held by ‘Spirited Away.’
Roughly two months after its premiere, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train has now become one of Japan‘s highest-grossing films of all time.
Selling more than 22.5 million tickets as of Sunday, the anime feature raked in upward of ¥30 billion JPY (approximately $291 million USD) in the Japanese domestic box office alone, reaching a milestone previously surpassed only by Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. It also became the fastest film to achieve the phenomenal result, doing so in just 59 days as compared to the latter’s 253 days. It’s now on track to beat Spirited Away‘s ¥30.8 billion JPY to become the highest-grossing film in Japan of all time.
To reward fans and push the film even further along, Demon Slayer will be hosting MX4D and 4DX screenings across the nation on December 26, with 300,000 acrylic keychains in the shape of train tickets ready as gifts for those attending.
Elsewhere in entertainment, Chris Pine is reportedly in talks to join Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons movie.
