David Zwirner Presents New Works by Yayoi Kusama, Raymond Pettibon and More
Pieces that reflect on these unprecedented times.
David Zwirner‘s New York City gallery is hosting a group exhibition featuring new works by its blue-chip roster of internationally acclaimed artists. Titled “20/20,” the presentation is displaying a wide array of works including paintings and sculptures. Participating artists include Yayoi Kusama, Kerry James Marshall, Nate Lowman, Toba Khedoori, Shio Kusaka, Carol Bove, among many others. With these pieces, the gallery reflects on the pandemic, social unrest and environmental crises that have embroiled the world.
“The world has never faced such uncertainty: everything from our understanding of public health and racial injustice to our geopolitical order and our social and environmental responsibilities is being challenged and rethought. 2020 may go down as the watershed year when the deck was reshuffled; and while we don’t know the future, our minds are busy speculating, anxiously rethinking and looking for a vision beyond,” said the gallery in a statement.
Highlights of the exhibition include new paintings by Yayoi Kusama featuring her signature floral and abstract motifs, a work by Kerry James Marshall portraying a crow and a goldfinch, otherworldly sculptures by Carol Grove as well as black and white drawings by Raymond Pettibon.
On the occasion of the “20/20” exhibition opening last month, Kusama shared a message relaying her reflections on the year:
I find it so lamentable,
The alarming, unwonted ordeal that has come upon us.
O demons of unwonted fate.
We will stand and face you.
We will stand and face you.
Through my art I go on manifesting, with all my heart, my reverence and
love for the cosmos, the world, and all humanity.
Our aspiration for a resplendent future begins with this.
Our resplendent hope is sure to be fulfilled.
