Khabib Nurmagomedov Overtakes Jon Jones on UFC Pound-for-Pound Fighter List
Following his unexpected retirement.

After his dominant second-round submission victory over Justin Gaethje and retirement at UFC 254, Khabib Nurmagomedov has now secured the top spot on the UFC‘s Pound-for-Pound Fighter List. During his post-fight interview, the emotional Dagestani Lightweight Champion noted the end of his MMA career and ask for the number one spot. “I know only one thing I want from UFC, you guys have to be me on No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, because I deserve this. UFC undisputed, undefeated lightweight champion, 13-0, 13 in UFC, 29 in all pro MMA career. I think I deserve it.”
Earlier this week, the UFC noted Nurmagomedov’s 29-0 record including three consecutive title defenses while losing only two rounds during his entire UFC career by putting him at the top spot. With that movement, “The Eagle” overtook longstanding UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones igniting a debate about the relevancy of the list. Initially conceding the spot in celebration of Nurmagomedov’s victory, taking to Twitter Jones quickly changed his tune, “Definitely a powerful moment, but my logic is definitely not clouded. I’ve won 15 world titles, he just won his 4th. The fact that this is even a conversation is mine blowing to me.”
It is currently unclear how long Nurmagomedov will stand at the top of the list as he has been adamant about his retirement. Reports note that Nurmagomedov will still be considered an active fighter on the UFC roster until he notifies the United States Anti-Doping Agency to pull him from the drug testing pool, officially cementing his retirement.
