Jake Gyllenhaal Reunites With Denis Villeneuve for a Prison-Escape Drama on HBO

Southpaw actor Jake Gyllenhaal is now reuniting with Dune director Denis Villeneuve for a third time after Prisoners and Enemy, this time working on a limited series drama based on a Norwegian novel for HBO.

Named The Son, the upcoming show draws from a book of the same name by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, described as “a tale of vengeance set amid Oslo’s brutal hierarchy of corruption.” The story follows a “strangely charismatic and complacent young man” called Sonny Lofthus, who by his late 20s has spent nearly half his life in prison paying for other peoples’ crimes. As a result of his father committing suicide to avoid being outed as a corrupt policeman, Lofthus develops a heroin addiction early on, which becomes a way Oslo’s crime overland the twin manages to keep him locked up without resistance. In a turn of events, Lofthus discovers a long-hidden secret about his father, and decides to make an escape from prison, hunting down those who wronged him.

Joining Gyllenhaal and Villeneuve will be the original book’s author Nesbø himself as executive producer, alongside writer Lenore Zion — whose previous works include Billions, Channel Zero, and Ray Donovan — and Westworld veterans Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy of Kilter Films.
