Benny The Butcher Wants His Respect Now With New "Legend" Music Video
“Said I’m gonna be a legend soon, I’m a legend now.”
“The Butcher Coming!” Benny The Butcher‘s signature catch-phrase is finally coming true after over a year-long wait between his critically-acclaimed The Plugs I Met and his new album Burden of Proof, out tomorrow, October 16 via Griselda Records. After premiering “Timeless” featuring Lil Wayne and Big Sean, Benny announced his album (which is produced exclusively by Hit-Boy) with one last single before tomorrow’s release. “Legend” is a motivational rags-to-riches recounting of his come-up with top-notch lyricism and pure quotables for days.
Take for instance this stream of effortless bars: “And I don’t want nothing for free, they didn’t know me then, bet they checkin’ now/ The best player gettin’ drafted in the seventh round/ I learnеd rules from the streets and wrote thеm lessons down/ I know a hundred fifty-five thousand weigh like seven pounds.” The chorus focuses on getting his credit in the present and he even alludes to Kobe’s tragic passing while rapping, “But you know how it go, Kobe got his fifth title/ And somehow still live in the shadow of Michael/ Before it’s over, give a n*gga his credit/ Am I wrong? I want my bouquet when I can smell it.” It fits in perfectly with LeBron’s recent NBA Finals victory speech, “I want my damn respect, too.” So give props to those doing excellent work right now, no matter the field.
But the best bar of the song is reserved for, “I’m a boss, so my h*es too bougie for Olive Garden/ Huh, rap circles ’round n*ggas, that’s my department.” 2020 is the de facto year of the veteran rapper. At age 35, Benny The Butcher is putting out the best work of his career. Expect the same when you listen to Burden of Proof tomorrow.
