adidas Originals' Continental 80 Is Going Through a Phase With Its Zipper and Bolt Detailing
The “Chalk White” suede tennis sneaker wants to be a bit edgier.
adidas Originals‘ Continental 80 doesn’t scream interesting or exciting — it’s a classic Three Stripes sneaker that first released in the 1980s, making little impact when it first dropped and only a bit more noise once it was reimagined as the YEEZY Powerphase. However, adidas Originals has changed that with its all-new pair, which combines the classic “Cloud White” suede sneaker with a zipper detail on the tongue.
The result is something that’s both classic and recognizable, but informed by utilitarian and skateboarding aesthetics. The zipper allows for easy on-off wearing, while the classic lacing system has been completely redesigned. Here, round laces run through dual metal eyelets that line the lateral and medial side of the zipper-panel tongue, with outer eyelets on the main eyestay appearing as larger bolt-like holes.
adidas Originals adds a fatter nylon tongue that appears underneath the suede zip-equipped overlay, and rounds out the pair with minimal branding and the shoe’s signature tri-colored webbing stripe on both sides. A tonal webbing stripe and debossed adidas Trefoil branding graces the heel, subsequently rounding out the pair.
