Maison Margiela's Artisanal Co-Ed SS20 Collection is Work-in-Progress Couture

A majority of the garments were made using upcycled materials.

Maison Margiela has taken to Paris Fashion Week to showcase its Spring/Summer 2020 collection in its Artisinal co-ed show.

Combining both menswear and womenswear in one walk, creative director John Galliano presented everything from the highly unexpected collaboration between the French house and Reebok — developing a Tabi boot-meets-Instapump Fury hybrid — as well as many couture looks that reflect upon societal standards and uniforms.

The SS20 collection brought off-the-shoulder coats that tap into a relaxed body language and the associations that come along with it, offering a nonchalant look that is contrasted by well-considered styling of ties and perfectly placed draping. The majority of materials selected for the Artisinal collection are reclaimed, delivering conflict between the bourgeois uniforms presented and the way they are produced.

As a result, pin-striped suits are offered up to look as if they’re still a work in progress, with the sleeve hanging off the shoulder hem. Other pieces sporting hand-cut holes, off-kilter dresses appearing unfinished and haphazardly underpinned, and woolen suits with tulle inserts continue to showcase the craftsmanship that goes into Artisinal tailoring and the fitting process.

Coats and jackets appear inside-out and turned-in on themselves, while the use of traditional colors brings the collection back to its formal, high-attire roots. Take a look at the Maison Margiela Artisinal co-ed SS20 show in the gallery above, and keep an eye out for the collection’s release at the house’s boutiques worldwide in the coming months.
