It’s a big night for Hollywood as it celebrates another year in film and television with the 77th Golden Globe Awards. This year’s ceremony, once again hosted by Ricky Gervais, saw big wins for Bong Joon-ho‘s Korean drama and Cannes Palme d’Or awardee Parasite, HBO‘s Chernobyl and Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Solo category winners include Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Fleabag, Awkwafina in The Farewell and Joaquin Phoenix in Joker.
1917 director Sam Mendes overcame the likes of Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese to win Best Director – Motion Picture, along with the WWI epic bringing home the coveted Best Motion Picture – Drama award over The Irishman, Joker, Marriage Story, and The Two Popes. Surprisingly, three of the five nominees for the category were Netflix films, who also scored one nomination in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category with Dolemite Is My Name, making it a big year for the streaming giant’s original content.
On top of the category winners, 10-time Golden Globe nominee Tom Hanks and three-time nominee Ellen DeGeneres were honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Carol Burnett Award respectively.
