New Balance Hong Kong Teases Minimalist, Logo-Free 997 Model

Swapping the oversized “N” for embroidered branding.

Of New Balance‘s many archival silhouettes, 1991’s 997 is a true fan-favorite. Despite seeing plentiful off-kilter remixes over the past several years, the silhouette was never stripped of its classic “N” logo — until now.

As part of a special drop in Hong Kong, New Balance has imagined two pristine grey 997 models. The “Grey Day” models feature understated tonal detailing, from the upper to the outsole. Black and white accents on the midsoles lend a gentle contrast to the plush pigskin suede that informs each shoe, further distinguished by slightly different sole units. Of course, the most obvious difference is that one of the shoes features no branding atop its pebbled leather tongue, and the media side logo has been swapped for embroidered “New Balance Made in USA” text, lending the clunky sneaker an extra low-key feel.

The New Balance M997GD1 and M997SGR “Grey Day” will launch on September 5 across the globe.

Most recently, New Balance served up a new iteration of its immense Fresh Foam More runner.
