Vancouver-based sneaker makers Native Shoes has just created the world’s first and only 100 percent biodegradable sneaker, made entirely from plant-based materials.

Founded in 2009, the Canadian footwear company has dedicated itself to being 100 percent lifecycle managed by 2023, and the Plant Shoe is the first step towards achieving that goal. The non-chemical and non-animal-derived shoe utilizes an array of plant-based materials in its construction. Above, the entire upper is made from carded pineapple husk and organic cotton. This sits on a cork and sisal-backed midsole, and a natural lactae hevea outsole. An organic linen sock liner and kenaf and corn felt insole fills the shoe on the inside, which is all tied together by a pair of organic cotton laces. The bonding material for the shoe is also completely compostable, using an olive oil-soaked jute thread and a natural latex-based glue.

Native Shoes’ Plant Shoe will be available on June 12 in both men and women’s sizes over at Native Shoes’ website and will have a price tag of $200 USD.

And for more eco-friendly projects, adidas has renewed its Run For The Oceans initiative with Parley this year.
