Nike Launches Sustainable Guideline for Fashion Brands and Consumers

Outlining ten core principles to address climate change.

Following swiftly behind CEO Mark Parker’s expressed commitment to sustainability in Nike’s FY18 Impact Report, the brand has unveiled an extensive guide to promote sustainability in the industry and address the growing impact of climate change. The “Circular Design Guide” was created in collaboration with Central Saint Martins and University of the Arts London, hoping to inspire “considered choices that will shift the world forward.”

There are ten key principles outlined in the workbook, addressing topics such as materials, packaging, durability, waste avoidance, and versatility. Each tenet comes detailed with “Thought Starters” and case study sections, which have been executed by Nike alongside companies and designers including Levi’s, Patagonia, Christopher Raeburn and Outerknown. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to access the digital booklet — whether product creators, students or just interested individuals — and flip through its series of questions and specific examples, like Nike’s own Flyleather material that is made up of at least 50 percent recycled fibers.

“We have an obligation to consider the complete design solution, inclusive of how we source it, make it, use it, return it and, ultimately, how we reimagine it,” said John Hoke, Nike’s Chief Design Officer.
