R2-D2 & C-3PO Share Emotional Scene in Latest 'Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker' Clip
Possibly bidding their goodbyes after 42 years on screen.
As fans gear up for the end of the Skywalker saga with this week’s premiere of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, two of the franchise’s most beloved characters are also getting ready to bid their goodbyes after 42 years on screen.
The film’s latest TV spot shines a light on the long-term friendship that blossomed between R2-D2 and C-3PO, who first met in Tatooine during The Phantom Menace. 3PO, voiced by Anthony Daniels, speaks warmly to R2 as they face what could be their last adventure together. “All we’ve done. After all this time, I want you to know that you’ve been a real friend R-2,” he says to the smaller droid. “My best one, in fact.”
R2 and 3PO have been around since the very beginning of the Star Wars franchise and, despite the minor disagreements, have always helped each other out. In Attack of the Clones, R2 helped 3PO find his proper head after it was swapped with a Battle Droid’s, while in A New Hope, 3PO offered to donate parts for R2’s repair after he took damage from fighting with Luke Skywalker in the X-Wing’s astromech slot.
