Kali Uchis Shares Theatrical "Solita" Music Video
A campy visual for the bilingual single.
Kali Uchis upped the ante earlier this month by dropping off her first bilingual single, “Solita,” which was produced by J. Balvin alongside Tainy, Sevn Thomas and Jahaan Sweet. Now the singer has followed up to the track with an official music video, tapping director Amber Grace Johnson and producer Object & Animal for the otherworldly visual.
The spot sees Kali Uchis take on many different characters and vibrant personalities, starting out with an outer-space themed scene and transforming into the likes of an exotic dancer and a goddess being worshipped by the men around her. Throughout it all, the artist shifts between English verses and Spanish hooks, a rendition that she previously stated is meant to make fans “feel sexy when they listen to it.” “This song is about healing, freedom and embracing the mixed emotions that come with that,” she said.
As for the chorus, she explained in an interview with Zane Lowe that it translates to “I’d rather dance alone than with the devil.” She added: “I think that just goes back to wanting to feel empowered about independence, rather than feel like, ‘Oh, poor me, I’m alone.’”
“Solita” follows behind Uchis’ debut studio album, Isolation, which released in April of 2018. Outside of the new record, the songstress has recently been featured on KAYTRANADA’s latest project, BUBBA, for the catchy track “10%.” Meanwhile, she joined Jorja Smith earlier this year for a joint spring 2019 tour.
