ASOS recently announced that it has signed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment – an initiative across multiple industries that aims to promote and act upon a circular economy for plastics. In doing so, ASOS has joined over 400 companies and governments that have set self-initiated commitments related to the use of plastic.

ASOS’s commitments aim to shift the company’s thinking behind the use of plastic packaging. By 2025, the online fast fashion retailer will take action to eliminate all problematic and unnecessary plastic packaging material, make sure that all needed plastic is reusable, recyclable, or compostable (instead of single-use) and utilize renewable materials from post-consumer waste in its new packaging.

The company has already shown initiative in this space, as its plastic mailing bags are currently 100% recyclable and made from 25% recycled material. From here, the company plans to transition to at least 65% recycled material in 2020.

Other companies who have committed to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment include Apple, Selfridges, Stella McCartney, H&M, Target, Walmart, Nestle and more. Some of these companies are also testing other types of sustainable practices outside of plastics, including H&M, which recently announced that it will be testing a clothing rental service.

Recently, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation brought on various heavyweight partners for its Jeans Redesign initiative.
