Modernica & Cleon Peterson Team Up for Limited-Edition 'Land of Shadows' Furniture
Bringing the artist’s shadowy figures to your living space.

Last year, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver teamed up with Modernica and artist Cleon Peterson to release limited edition furniture alongside his “Shadow of Men” exhibition. For Modernica and Peterson’s third collaboration, the Case Study Furniture Daybed Sectional and Upholstered Rocker Chair are updated with the artist’s recognizable, shadowy characters and tumultuous aesthetic.
Aiming to blur the line between observation and experience, Peterson’s black and white ‘Land of Shadows’ artwork covers the modular daybed and iconic Fiberglass Shell Chair. Like previous designs, Peterson’s print explores themes of political corruption and violence, “subjects in our world that is ever present but that everybody denies or avoids facing,” the artist explains. “I make images of what I see as being a reality. Hopefully they speak some kind of truth to people and we can have more empathy for what goes on in this world.”
Back in 2016, Peterson revamped Modernica’s signature daybed. The simple design brought the bold graphics of the artist’s paintings and fluid motion of his sculptures to an object people could interact with and use. “I love the idea of artwork not just being something that … sits on the wall, but something you actually live with at the same time,” explains Peterson. “[Something] accessible to people so that they can have it in their homes and live around it so it’s not such a precious thing, but something that … comes into your world in a different way.”
The Daybed and Sectional pieces are limited to a quantity of 50, while the Rocker chair is limited to 100 pieces. Ranging from $875 to $8,500 USD, the entire Cleon Peterson x Modernica collection is available to pre-order now on Modernica’s website.
Elsewhere in art, Takashi Murakami unveiled a a 10-meter-long work that he jokingly called a “stupid cat painting.”
