HBO Max Reportedly Developing 'Friends' Reunion Special
Just in time for the hit sitcom’s 25th anniversary.
Following Jennifer Aniston‘s record-breaking Instagram picture with the Friends cast and the recent get-together of Courtney Cox and Matthew Perry, reports are claiming that a proper Friends reunion special is currently in the works at HBO Max.
While further information about the project remains under wraps, the unscripted project has been alluded by Aniston while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She confirmed that a reboot of the beloved ’90s sitcom isn’t happening, but they are working together to make a reunion special happen. “I would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is,” she said. “So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.”
Aniston’s comments contrast those of co-creators/executive producers Marta Kauffman and David Crane’s from the Friends 25th-anniversary panel earlier this September. The two shut down rumors of both a reunion show and a reboot, stating that a reboot was “not going to beat what we did” and that “the show we wanted to do. We got it right, and we put a bow on it.”
HBO Max recently spent $425 million USD for the show’s rights, effectively moving Friends from Netflix over to the upcoming subscription streaming service in 2020.
