Joe Casely-Hayford OBE Has Passed Away From Cancer
The designer was 62.
Joe Casely-Hayford OBE, the namesake founder of Britain’s Casely-Hayford and former creative director of Gieves & Hawkes, has passed away at age 62, following a three-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his son, co-designer Charlie, daughter Alice, wife Maria and two brothers.
An early colleague of John Galliano, Joe Casely-Hayford launched his first eponymous label in 1984 after graduating from Central Saint Martins and quickly built a name upon his subversive, punk-indebted tailoring. Casely-Hayford’s pioneered unique lighter fabrics and ingenious cuts that allowed for freer movement, deconstructing the conservative suit for a younger audience. At the height of his early career, Casely-Hayford dressed music icons like Bono, Lou Reed and The Clash before temporarily stepping back from the fashion industry.
Joe Casely-Hayford returned in 2009 with son Charlie in tow, relaunching the eponymous Casely-Hayford brand in stores across the world, including 10 Corso Como, Dover Street Market and Barneys. Last year, the brand opened its first standalone outpost in London.
