5 Things You Missed From the 'Captain Marvel' Trailer
From beepers to Mar-Vell.
Captain Marvel’s first trailer has dropped and, as expected, it’s offered key hints at what the film could be while still being as cryptic as you’d expect from a Marvel Studios trailer. Starring Brie Larson as the hero, the clip also showcases a digitally aged Samuel L. Jackson as a two-eyed Nick Fury, as well as a glimpse at Jude Law. From beepers to origin stories to Mar-Vell, we take a look at five things to take away from the trailer.
A New Kind of Origin Story
The trailer begins with a green-suited Captain Marvel falling into a Blockbusters, with a voiceover seemingly explaining that flashes of Danver’s Earth-based life come back in short spurts, but she has difficulty telling what’s real and what isn’t.
There’s also a scene when Danvers is suspended upside down in what could possibly be a memory wiping scene that would go some way to explaining why she doesn’t remember the Earth part of her life.
The non-linear story would also be an interesting way to revamp the way Marvel’s stories are told given the fact that viewers are very well attuned to the typical origin story.

In the Comic Books, Carol Danvers was originally introduced as an officer of the US Air Force who gained her powers through the accidental fusion of powers. These powers came from the original Captain Mar-Vell, who is Kree. That race has already been introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy, with Ronan The Accuser being Kree — and, despite not being in this trailer, is confirmed to be in this film.
It’s long been rumored that Jude Law will be playing the original Captain Mar-Vell and this trailer adds more fuel to that fire. The cinematic universe often diverges from the comic books, so how this actually plays out remains to be seen.
Skrulls = the New/Old Hydra?

The events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier showcased that S.H.I.E.L.D. was liable to being infiltrated and judging from this trailer, the organisation might have prior history in this. The trailer makes a point of having Nick Fury say “you have no idea what threats are out there” while Danvers punching what appears to be an old woman but is likely a Skrull in disguise.
This could be a showcase of S.H.I.E.L.D. have disguised skrulls throughout its organisation, much like with Hydra and, if this bears out, could be a major plot point of the film.

S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 1990s has a pre-eye injury Nick Fury saying that he “knows a renegade soldier when he sees one,” overlaying the footage of Danvers fighting an unseen villain on top of a train. This would lead us to believe that the actions of Danvers on the train caught the eye of a jaded Fury, who also said “Truth be told, I was ready to hang it up ‘til I met you today.”
Just why he felt this way is yet to be explained, but it can be assumed that the discovery of Danvers led to the Avengers Initiative as we know it and that her disappearance could have led to the program being shelved. The film could also showcase that an insider caused Fury’s eye loss, which he has referred to in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as “the last time he trusted someone.”
Nick Fury Always Had the Infinity War Beeper

Shocked viewers of Avengers: Infinity War likely stayed in stunned silence until Nick Fury went to collect his beeper to give a hint of an upcoming Captain Marvel. Now this trailer shows Fury using the same beeper, indicating that he’d always had it on hand in case things got as catastrophic as they did in Infinity War.
Of course, with all of this said, Marvel’s trailers are famous for misleading audiences and keeping key plot details under wraps until the film is seen. So what actually happens likely won’t be solidly known until the film is released in March 2019.
