UPDATE: Google Ditches Plans to Open Chicago Retail Store

UPDATE: It is being reported by the Chicago Tribune that Google has ditched its plan to open a 14,000-square-foot retail space on W. Randolph Street in Chicago. Although it has not been confirmed that Google has forgone plans to open a store in the state, many speculate the decision comes due to an issue with the lease terms, the building or the location itself. Google has yet to make an official statement.

According to reports, Google is poised to open a permanent retail space in Chicago. The plans — seen by The Chicago Tribune – are for a space spanning 14,000-square-foot across a number of interconnected brick buildings several blocks south of Google’s current Midwest headquarters.

If the store goes ahead, it would be Google’s first permanent retail location and would stock the company’s hardware products including the Google Pixel and Google Home. Previously, Google had planned to open a 5,000-square-foot space in New York, but these plans were abandoned and the space was leased out.
