Cementing the unexpected name change of his fledgling label, multi-creative designer Matthew Williams recently held the inaugural runway presentation for 1017 ALYX 9SM at Paris Fashion Week.

Dubbed “ENDLESS,” the Spring/Summer 2019 collection serves as a fresh start for ALYX’s pursuit of perfection and precision, beauty and efficiency through timeless garments. Opting to combine both menswear and womenswear ranges, clothes that dazzled the star-studded crowd captured a unique mix of urban, street, punk and industrial accented by an exuding defiant energy.

This time around ALYX showed true innovation, utilizing advanced textiles and complex technical processes like laser-etched rainwear patterning, Kevlar and leather bonding and sophisticated garment dyes. In the creation of progressive looks, Williams delved into his denim roots and reimagined the rugged engineered steel hardware signature he has become known for since the founding of ALYX four years ago.

But it was the collaborations that really tied the collection together, as team-ups with Nike, Vibram, Mackintosh, Majocchi and more highlighted the collaborative nature of the label. Leading the mashups were a set of Nike essentials which received a reworking in an exercise of disruption towards unification and the sportswear giant’s iconic Free sole was also given a completely new upper and elevated by a Vibram crampon. While a continuation of the partnership ALYX has built with Mackintosh saw an introduction of new rainwear silhouettes that utilize traditional rubberized cotton made in a specific Scottish factory. Rounding up the series of notable collaborations was an ongoing partnership Italian fabric specialists Majocchi. Pointing towards process, the collaboration explores high-performance textiles, including high tenacity nylon Kevlar and polar fleece bonded with a 3-layer taped Japanese mesh.
