Despite a host of prominent artists unfollowing Kanye West on Twitter as a result of his controversial statements on April 25, there were a few creatives who remained in West’s corner, including fellow Chicago native Chance the Rapper. However, Chance’s tweets sparked a firestorm of their own, prompting an involved response.

In a lengthy written note posted to his Twitter, Chance noted that “Kanye West is not just a mentor or big homie to me. He’s my family,” and expresses displeasure over “[his] attempt to support Kanye … being used to discredit my brothers and sisters in the movement.” Chance continues by affirming that he’d “never support anyone who has made a career out of hatred, racism and discrimination,” and explaining that his “statement about black folk not having to be democrats (though true) was a deflection from the real conversation,” reiterating that for “generations,” Chicago’s elected Democrats showed “no investment of regard for black schools, neighborhood [sic] or black lives.” At the end of the statement, Chance calls West his “brother-in-Christ,” describing his responsibility to “pick up the phone and talk to [West] about it.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s re-election campaign is using West’s support to generate funds.
