Pharrell Williams Sends Donald Trump Cease & Desist for Playing "Happy" at a Rally
That took place hours after the tragic shooting in Pittsburgh.
Pharrell Williams has sent President Donald Trump a cease and desist letter after the president played his song “Happy” during a Midwest rally that took place just hours after the tragic shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.
“On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged ‘nationalist,’ you played his song ‘Happy’ to a crowd at a politic event in Indiana,” Pharrell’s attorney Howard King wrote in the letter, obtained by the Hollywood Reporter. “There was nothing ‘Happy’ about the tragedy inflicted upon our country on Saturday and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose.”
Pharrell’s legal team specifies that Trump did not and will not receive permission to publicly perform or otherwise disseminate any of Pharrell’s music, citing both copyright and trademark infringement.
The Washington Post confirms that “Happy” was played during Trump’s rally and despite the massacre that occurred on the same day, Trump decided not to cancel his campaign rally in Indiana but joked that he had almost canceled the event because he had a “bad hair day.”
