Under the direction of the revered Chitose Abe, Sacai unveiled its 2018 spring/summer collection at Paris Fashion Week. Just as pioneering conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner‘s work is left to a range of interpretations, both inward and outward, Abe’s newest range does the same. This is why a number of early fits featured the ambiguous phrase — “STATIS AS IN VECTOR ALL IN DUE COURSE” — that appeared in Weiner’s late 2012 show at Lisson Gallery, while the clothing itself seemed to struggle, intentionally, to corral its free-flowing form. Parachute straps attempt to maintain order, while patterns and prints clash with calculation, and Sacai’s ingenious pairing of fabrics and materials become front and center, yet again.
Weiner’s work often leads its audience down the road of introspection and greater meaning, after realizing its literal form is utterly indecipherable. But in the end, it just a fun jumble of words to the American artist. Which may perfectly define Abe’s efforts. ”One should live the way they want to, one should create the way they want to. Whatever is happening in the world, you should just follow your path,” the Sacai designer said to WWD.
