Trix Rabbit and Underdog Illustrator Joe Harris Has Died at the Age of 89
He also coined the famous slogan, “Silly rabbit! Trix are for kids.”

Joe Harris, the famous illustrator of General Mills’s Trix cereal rabbit Tricks and Underdog, the iconic animated TV hero, has died at the age of 89. Fans of Trix cereal will undoubtedly remember the mascot and the slogan, “Silly rabbit! Trix are for kids,” which Harris also came up with. Trix debuted in 1955 and in 1959 Joe illustrated the rabbit and came up with the ad copy slogan which Chet Stover, creative director on the Trix account said, “In a business where the only thing we have to sell are ideas, it is of first importance the credit is given where credit belongs — and Joe gets all the credit for this one.”
Harris was also responsible for bringing Underdog, one of the most iconic animated TV heroes of all time, to life. The canine superhero, a scrawny dog with an oversized red suit and blue cape would always foil the plans of evil scientist Simon Bar Sinister and wolf gangster Riff Raff. In 2007, Harris told the The Fresno Bee that “Underdog was a bumbler, he would catch the crook whether he knew how he did it or not.”
Both of Joe’s creations will live on in the memories of fans across the world.
