Origins

Hailing from Malmö, Sweden, Très Bien originally started in 2006 as a menswear/contemporary boutique that stocked some of the most unique brands such as Engineered Garments, Kolor and Maison Margiela. Although Malmö is by no means a location known for its fashion, and is a place where most people would associate with footballing icon Zlatan Ibrahimović; brothers Hannes and Simon Hogeman, along with childhood friends Jakob Törnberg and Björn Linden, thought it was the ideal area to set up. Working at sporting goods retailer InterSport in their earlier years, the two brothers managed to save up €35,000 — €40,000 to start Très Bien.

Très Bien’s strength is its unique ability to cohesively blend high fashion labels such as Dries Van Noten and Prada with smaller or more accessible brands like Palace Skateboards and Nike. Its vision of bringing together brands from different categories to create an aesthetic that is separate from the quintessential Scandinavian style has given birth to what can probably be referred to as the “Très Bien look.” This progressive nature cemented the Malmö retailer as one of the most prestigious stockists for brands and was even one of the few locations to have stocked Kanye West’s Nike Air Yeezy 2 sneaker back in 2012.

After collaborations with the likes of Mark McNairy, Tricker’s and Diemme, as well as opening a new venture under the name WELCOME with fellow Scandinavians OUR LEGACY, Très Bien went on to debut its first in-house collection in 2014.

What It’s Known For

Très Bien’s first collection premiered on Vogue‘s lookbook library — www.style.com — which became defunct but then got resurrected as an online store. We were presented with an inaugural collection that featured a small number of pieces. Considered, refined and understated, its first lineup was everything the retailer stood for.

It was Très Bien’s second collection for Fall/Winter 2014 that highlighted its subtle yet sophisticated aesthetic and certain pieces such as the coach jacket sold out immediately. Graphics were limited so the pieces could focus on silhouettes and palettes. This was probably the beginning stages of when consumers started to consider Très Bien not as a retailer, but as a fashion house.

The brand has now gone on to consistently produce two expanding, seasonal collections per year, and is still collaborating with even more brands that includes Stussy, HAERFEST and Common Projects, as well as coming out with special “souvenir” items like candles.

Inspirations/Materials/Fit/Manufacturing

Inspirations: The fashion house is basically an updated Scandinavian version of A.P.C. with a store, collaborations, classic sportswear and high fashion references. Moreover, the house is not afraid of dabbling in Swedish politics while providing intellectual commentary on it via the vessel of clothing, evident when it produced a “Fuck Jimmie” T-shirt for Spring/Summer 2015.

Key Materials: Polyamide, linen, silk, virgin wool and cotton.

Fits: Slim cuts but not too fitted and runs true to size.

Manufacturing: Portugal.

With the numerous amounts of brands out there on the market today, it’s often difficult to narrow down on what to actually go for. While seeing a particular garment worn by your favorite artist or on a set of streetsnaps might sway you, it’s still hard and almost impossible nowadays to find that real connection to a label; where you don’t have even have to purchase an item to appreciate the brand. In our latest series called Spotlight, we distill brands to their essential points such as origins, key pieces, fits and more, so you can get the full picture without having to scour the web.
