In an “homage to rave culture and club lore,” KENZO has tapped longtime collaborator Traum Inc. to helm a new video for Spring/Summer 2017. Dubbed “prints,” the trippy piece explores “the very definition of rave, bouncing from its origins to its present-day forms.” As Traum Inc. puts it, “It’s obvious to us that rave culture is not a finished story, it’s still in a state of transition from our past to future — in the middle of which we all are.” The unique end result is a kaleidoscopic collage that bombards the senses with CGI effects, VHS footage of a New York nightlife scene from Nelson Sullivan, and shots from ’90s flick Public Trancesport. Adds Traum Inc. founder Thomas Traum:

Past or future, there’s a great deal of optimism in the context of rave culture – it’s all about the notions of unity, acceptance, love, respect and possibilities within the international, interracial, intersexual and non-binary community. This is why we want to believe that this culture will continue existing, growing and progressing, it couldn’t be more relevant in 2017… We see Nelson Sullivan’s work as iconic and revolutionary – while documenting his day-and-nightlife surroundings he also documented the birth of a culture, and invented the format of video blogging – way ahead of his time. This video is our expedition into the different eras, where we created a visual dialogue between the yesterday and the tomorrow.
