Vince Staples Highlights the Importance of the Chuck Taylor on LA Style and Culture
“Do not choke the Chucks.”
Converse’s Chuck Taylor silhouette not only holds a special place within the heart of the footwear industry, but may be the most important to those on the West Coast — Los Angeles to be specific. In the latest Karim Huu Do-directed video, we’re introduced to the second installment of Converse’s Forever Chuck Scenes. This time around, Long Beach’s own Vince Staples takes you through the city of Los Angeles to highlight the Chuck Taylor’s importance to west coast culture. During the discussion Staples also chats with Los Angeles Laker Jordan Clarkson and the creator of Born x Raised, Spanto.
Take a look at an excerpt of the conversation with Staples below and let us know what the Converse Chuck Taylor means to your personal style. You can check out the entire conversation here.
What does the Chuck Taylor mean to you?
The Chuck Taylor is able to coexist in any surrounding or event. It’s never too little or never too much. It’s a good tool to have in the world when everyone is looking at what the next person is wearing. Culturally it’s covered a lot of ground.I haven’t worn another shoe other than the Chuck for the past two years. It makes me relatable and reachable, and that’s important for me to be relatable to the people who listen to my music.
What does the Chuck Taylor mean to LA?
That shoe is always going to permeate, I don’t see it going anywhere any time soon. It’s something correlated directly with Southern California. It’s something that’s consistent. The video taps into the city’s diverse youth culture — from the neighborhoods where LA’s underground hip-hop scene originated to some of the people that define the area today.
