British menswear designer Martine Rose showed her Fall/Winter 2017 show at London Fashion Week Men’s at Tottenham’s Seven Sisters Market, far north from the main hubbub of fashion week. Considered an underground name on the menswear scene, Martine Rose has been known for her experimental and unpredictable shows. For Spring/Summer 2015, she showed only one outfit for the season. This season, for her first runway show in almost four years, Rose explored the subversion of different masculine roles — the banker, the bus driver, the estate agent, the office worker. She took stereotypical male sartorial motifs, such as a trench coat or a well-tailored suit, and turned them into elaborate ensembles. The result is a collection of dramatic garments consisting of super-sized suits jackets, trench coats deconstructed at the shoulders, extra-wide pants, and pastel colors with a touch of subversive sexuality. The whimsical fashion show took place amidst local vendors in an indoor market where guests were seated on mismatched seats, adding to the overall spectacle of the show.
