Tim Coppens' 2017 Spring/Summer Collection References Belgium's '90s Youth Culture
The designer channels the skateboard and club culture that existed during his younger years.
Tim Coppens is the supreme chancellor when it comes elevated sportswear — it’s one of the reasons why Under Armour tapped the prolific designer to lead its new premium-wear division. For his eponymous label this 2017 spring/summer, Mr. Coppens stays true to his aesthetic with a collection inspired by ’90s athletic gear. He cites the skateboard culture of that era since the designer himself was also an avid skater in his younger days. In that sense, the youth culture of ’90s Beligum also acts as a reference point for the range — the teenage angst, party culture and sportswear trend that existed in that time period is conveyed through the use of technical fabrics on silhouettes such as track suits, bomber jackets and joggers.
As usual, we also see the designer’s knack for paneling with color-blocked details and overlay trims. Touches of orange and silver also make their way to the pieces in order to highlight the collection’s active-meets-street fashion ethos.
