'The Girl With All the Gifts' Is the Dystopian Zombie Movie We've Been Waiting For
Flesh-eating children? Say no more.
Zombie films never seem to fail at keeping die hard fans intrigued, but every once in a while there’s a movie that goes beyond the genre and gives the subject matter a more thought-provoking spin. With an all-star cast that includes Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton and Paddy Considine, Warner Bros. UK’s upcoming Colm McCarthy-directed zombie flick, The Girl With All the Gifts looks like a promising mix of Children of Men, World War Z and 28 Days Later. The movie is an adaptation of a novel of the same name written by Mike Carey, which carries utopian and dystopian themes on the fate of humanity.
Set in Britain in the near future, a fungal disease has turned humans into flesh-eating beings called “hungries.” The government has identified a small group of infected children who are immune to the pathogen. They exhibit control over normal thoughts and emotions but are held in an army base, where they are subjected to experiments under biologist Dr. Caldwell (played by Glenn Close). The main protagonist Melanie (played by newcomer Sennia Nanua) then escapes with a small group of survivors and becomes humanity’s only hope for a cure. Watch the trailer above to see if the film can possibly make it to your best “zombie” movies list.
The Girl With All the Gifts hits theaters September 23.
