This Startup Wants to Make Virtual Reality Less Lonely
Alone together.
It’s no secret that virtual reality makes its users look a fool in front of other people who aren’t immersed in the same digital environment. The sensation is worse for the user, of course — be it in a crowded room or by themselves, the user is completely isolated within their goggles once the VR experience begins. California-based startup AltspaceVR is hoping to change that by creating a platform resembling a lobby where users can interact with others via humanoid avatars. For instance, standing close to another avatar will muffle faraway sounds in the virtual environment while allowing you to chat to the other user. Users will also be able to challenge each other to simple games like chess, or Dungeons and Dragons. The applications of this new virtual social space outside of the usual VR applications of gaming and adult content will allow VR to be enjoyed by a wider audience, with events such as karaoke nights, stand-up comedy shows, or even just watch the TV together.
