Watch This Segment From 'Homme Less,' The Story of the Homeless Model-Turned-Photographer
Delve into the paradoxical world of high-end photoshoots and sleeping rough of one fashion photographer.
In the highly superficial world of fashion, you might be surprised at what you find if you dig just a little deeper. Take former model and fashion photographer Mark Reay, who spends the day shooting the glamor of fashion for publications like Dazed and Elle, but spends the night sleeping rough. Directed by Thomas Wirthensohn, Homme Less provides a wholly unusual look at homelessness. “Mark chooses to sleep off the grid, and not to spend money on rent but to keep most of the other essentials,” says Wirthensohn. ”He has a cell phone, a computer, a bank account, insurance, and sometimes can spend some extra money on a few dinners at restaurants.”
On the possible repercussions of this exposé on Reay’s alternate life — his friends and employers being unaware of his living situation — Wirthensohn says, “We talked about it a lot and he was aware of the possible impact the release of the film would have on his life. He assured me that he’d rather share his story and live with the consequences.” Watch the segment above, and look for the documentary to premiere on August 7 at New York’s IFC Center.
