Hedi Slimane continues to leave his imprint on the iconic fashion label formerly known as Yves Saint Laurent by venturing further from the line’s historically recognizable identity in his latest collection. Saint Laurent’s 2016 spring/summer collection can effectively be summarized as embodying the vintage, California punk rock skate scene from the 1970s – a vast departure from black and white “Parisian chic.” Skin tight silhouettes, contrived of staple bohemian threads such as ponchos; lightweight jackets, cardigans, flannels and beanies flaunt colorful patterns and graphics, coinciding with the nonchalant attitude of the models, sporting dyed hair and hidden behind oversized white sunglasses. Traces of traditional Saint Laurent — black leather and cheetah print — have been intertwined with ensembles that feature vibrant palm trees prints, faded, ripped denim and seemingly beat up, well-worn low top canvas sneakers. Accessories like trucker caps and puka shell necklaces convincingly complete the old-school, Thrashin inspired skater boy looks.
