The Making of Magis' Wrought Iron "Officina" Furniture | Video

Italian design company Magis has a strong history in embracing high quality materials and techniques in its furniture designs. The firm’s 2015 Officina collection is an impressive feat of rustic wrought iron tables and chairs that is the product of master craftsmanship and industrial design. Spearheaded by French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec who served as guest designers, the project was the first time for iron makers to veer away from traditional techniques that are so instilled not just within the company but within the roots of the ancient craft itself. The new technique requires the heating of a rod and pressing it at just the right temperature and point to link it with another rod to form a structure. The iron is galvanized or cataphoretically-treated before being painted in polyester powder, and then joined with other fine materials like steel, tempered glass, American walnut wood, carrara marble, Ardesia slate and leather to complete each piece.
