Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are set to go head-to-head on May 2 in what looks to be one the most anticipated sporting events in recent history. Whether you’re an ardent boxing fan or not, the fight will no doubt have everyone glued to the television. The fight can be viewed in high-definition for $99 USD on pay-per-view, while standard-definition will come at a price of $89 USD. Both prices would come at a record high for a boxing match — even before both boxers have entered the ring — transcending previous record of $74.95 for high-definition and $64.95 for standard-definition. HBO and Showtime are the two pay networks that control both boxers’ television rights, and thus will receive the majority of the money.
The fight may generate an estimate of $300 million USD in pay-per-view revenues. This would break the record of $152 million set by Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez in September 2013. According to the Washington Post, “Promoters are expecting around 3 million pay-per-view buys, which also would top the record of 2.48 million held by the fight between Mayweather and Oscar de la Hoya in May 2007.” Under the agreements of the bout, Mayweather will get 60 percent of all revenue generated by the fight, and Pacquiao will get 40 percent.
