Mrs. Pound, A Fusion Diner Hidden Behind a Chinese Stamp Shop Front

Hong Kong is a long-fabled haven of mysterious alleys and decrepit factory buildings, each getting more obscure as the city continues to rapidly urbanize. Obscure, though, is a relative word in this case, especially as restaurants such as Mrs. Pound continue to pop up. Resting inconspicuously inside a Chinese stamp shop in Sheung Wan, this fusion American-styled interior is inspired by the (fictional) backstory of one Mrs. Pound.

According to local legend, the restaurant belongs to Mrs. Pound – a burlesque dancer who married a wealthy Hong Kong bureaucrat – with the menu informed by her sponsored world travels. As a result, Mrs. Pound applies Thai, Italian, Korean and other influences to traditional Chinese street food, resulting in tasty dishes like tuna larb, sriracha street corn and Xinjiang spiced lamb skewers. At the exterior, the restaurant is doored by a faux window display of stamps. The interior is revealed by pulling one of the stamps and sliding the front door, where visitors are at once immersed in a charmingly decorated interior, replete with various street finds, vintage portraits and neon signage contrasting the bold fuchsia interior.
