South African comedian Trevor Noah has been announced as the new host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, and will step into the role Jon Stewart has filled for 16 years. Noah is already a friend of the show, having recently served as a senior international correspondent and filing reports on such events such as Islamist group Boko Haram’s violent attacks in Nigeria. While Noah was a bit of a surprise choice due to being a relative unknown stateside, Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless expressed confidence in the hire, saying that Noah “has a huge international following and is poised to explode here in America.” Expressing excitement about his new job shortly after the news was confirmed, Noah tweeted, “No-one can replace Jon Stewart. But together with the amazing team at The Daily Show, we will continue to make this the best damn news show!” When Stewart announced his departure from the show last month, he said his final show could come as early as July, or as late as fall or winter.
