Design brand Shinola has been recognized for championing American craftsmanship since setting up shop in Detroit in 2011. Its “Great Americans Series” provides a lineup of goods commemorating iconic pioneers and innovators who’ve helped shaped American history. For the latest installment, the brand teamed up with the Muhammad Ali Center to create a limited-edition timepiece honoring the legendary athlete’s achievements. “This watch is a tribute to the principles that fuel his incredible life and serve as the founding pillars of the Muhammad Ali Center,” said Shinola’s Jacques Panis. Based in Muhammad Ali’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, the launch coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the center, which provides programming around education, gender equality and global citizenship driven by his six core principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect and Spirituality.
The watch embodies the spirit of “The Greatest” as the six principles are inscribed on the back, complete with a custom wooden box embossed with the Muhammad Ali Center’s logo. Offered in both 36mm and 41mm sizes, the stainless steel cushion case and luxe alligator strap provide a premium yet powerful feel to the overall design. The limited-edition pieces further evoke the boxer’s history as they are accompanied by rare photos of Muhammad Ali’s daily life, shot by award-winning photojournalist and Magnum member Thomas Hoepker.
The set retails for $2,250 USD and will be limited to just 400 pieces. The watch will be available exclusively through Shinola’s online and retail stores starting November 19, with proceeds going to the Muhammad Ali Center. Purchasing the timepiece will also provide membership to The Foundry: Shinola’s private collector’s club established exclusively for owners of limited-edition products.
