It seems The Weeknd‘s Grant Singer-directed music video, which was premiered on Apple Music for his chart-topping single “Can’t Feel My Face” may have drawn inspiration quite liberally from another source. Director Mitch Moore — who’s completed work for Mykki Blanco, MoMA PS1 and more — has revealed through his Instagram that a year ago, he had completed a music video for Montreal-based band Majical Cloudz which bears a striking resemblance to Abel’s visuals for his single. Moore’s work was never released to the public, but a confidential edited version was sent to various recipients which he believes was used as a reference for “Can’t Feel My Face.” Take a look at a side-by-side comparison below.
So about a year ago, I directed a video for Majical Cloudz. Because of creative differences, it never came out. But the production was large, and many feedback emails were sent out with private uploads of the edit. It’s come to my attention that some body at the helm of a certain mega popular video must have seen one or more of these unreleased edits. The resemblance is too uncanny. My mind is a mansion of creativity, so this petty theft is nbd to me. BUT I’M STILL CALLING THE POLICE!! ????
