Held earlier this month, the annual Goodwood Revival is a racing festival that brings together racing cars and motorcycles from the ’40s to the ’60s that would have competed during that era at the Goodwood Circuit in England. Comprised of 16 grids of vintage racers valued at upwards of $250 million USD (£150 million GBP), examples of automotive history include the likes of Ferrari 250 GTOs, AC Cobras, Aston Martin DB4 GTs and Jaguar E-Types battle it out amid the beautifully preserved Art Deco racetrack buildings, which are decked out in banners featuring the historically-accurate logos of period automotive brands. So true to history is the event that even a mockup version of a Tesco’s grocery store with mid-century products can be found in the main retail area. With spectators dressed to the nines in three-piece tweed suits and fascinators craning for a glimpse of the curvaceously aerodynamic bodies of the racers, this event is surely a worthy commemoration of that golden era of automotive racing. The series was shot by Peter Aylward, whose focus on capturing the world of motorsports was brought on by how a human figure “softens up and compensates” to the shapes and surfaces of man-made landscapes.
