A short film based on Kendrick Lamar‘s 2012 debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, is set to be released soon. The Kahlil Joseph-directed film will debut this Saturday at the inaugural outing of Sundance’s NEXT Fest, and is entitled m.A.A.d. Kahlil Joseph was originally commissioned by Kendrick to create m.A.A.d a couple years ago, following their work together on Kendrick’s Yeezus Tour production. Speaking to FADER about his venture, Kahlil Joseph “promised” “a kaleidoscope of storylines and ideas that defy typical categorization to explore new languages and new forms.” During his interview with FADER, Joseph also mentioned a meeting with Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar, which you can view a photo of below via Flying Lotus’ instagram. Talking about the meeting, Joseph said the following:
One night, Flying Lotus and I met with him, and we talked openly about how fresh and simple his whole concert could be. Kendrick had some ideas of his own that I tried to adapt, but eventually it became about what I can do with my collaborators in the window of time, and at that point things became a little more free form.
