As today marked the opening of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CEO Tim Cook took to the stage for his anticipated keynote speech to introduce a bevy of new initiatives for the Mac empire, and among them, a brand new desktop operating system dubbed “Yosemite.” Just as Mavericks introduced last year, Yosemite will continue to build upon the integration of iOS-style apps into the MacBook and iMac product lines, with hopes of making their interactions much more fluid and seamless. Details include a new Today view in the Notification Center, a more intuitive Spotlight search, a new streamlined Safari, the ability to make and answer calls from your Mac, SMS viewing in the Messages app, a neat Handoff feature in which either device – Mac or iPhone – recognizes the last thing you were doing on the other, and so much more. Although the beta version to OS X Yosemite will only be available to developers for the time being, Apple will release its newest operating system this fall for free. For more on Yosemite, head over to Apple’s website.
