As today marked the opening of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CEO Tim Cook took to the stage for his anticipated keynote speech to introduce a bevy of new initiatives for the Mac empire, and among them, a brand new desktop operating system dubbed “Yosemite.” Just as Mavericks introduced last year, Yosemite will continue to build upon the integration of iOS-style apps into the MacBook and iMac product lines, with hopes of making their interactions much more fluid and seamless. Details include a new Today view in the Notification Center, a more intuitive Spotlight search, a new streamlined Safari, the ability to make and answer calls from your Mac, SMS viewing in the Messages app, a neat Handoff feature in which either device – Mac or iPhone – recognizes the last thing you were doing on the other, and so much more. Although the beta version to OS X Yosemite will only be available to developers for the time being, Apple will release its newest operating system this fall for free.
